We may have gotten a little overzealous with our newsletter this “back to school” month… so we have a short-read that lay sadly on the cutting room floor. This one is for the teachers, mainly, so good thing it’s a short-read! If you see this and you know any teachers looking for ways to save time–at least ones in districts with Google Classroom–seriously… pass along.
And now, for some opinions! For the couple of you making it this far.
This month, Gemini’s new mode became a tutor, not just an answer machine, helping students understand “why” and “how” not just spit out “what.” But what will stop students from just using another model to get the pre-chewed pap? My take, as a former teacher, is that there will be just as many uncurious students now who will take the easy out as before–children are naturally curious and want to ask more questions and to take ownership of knowledge, not just do it for the A.
Still, the temptation to just use the “Answer me now!” models is much greater, so I believe school districts need to invest in vendors that incorporate both interaction models and academic integrity platforms so that teachers can be reported on how copy-and-pasty students get (on the negative side) and audit how much students asked thoughtful questions outside of the classroom (on the positive, if a little Big Brother-y side).
