Finding Your Voice with AI: Why Personal Experimentation Matters

A clip from our spring 2025 GenAI workshop for mission-driven teams, with AlignIQ founder Dan Garmat. Recorded May 2025.

Everyone needs to find their own way of working with AI, and nobody can do that experimenting for you.

Key takeaways

  • Everyone has their own collaboration style with AI, and their own jagged edge of where it helps.
  • Like math homework or learning a song in a choir, reading about it isn’t enough. You have to do it before it sinks in.
  • The value differs by work: research and synthesis for some, idea generation for creative work.
  • Use it for ideas, but make sure it’s your voice when it needs to be. The goal is to enhance your expertise, not replace it.

Try this with your team

Each person tries AI on one task they know well this week and reports back: where did it help, and where did it stop sounding like them?

Everyone needs to find their own collaboration style with artificial intelligence, so you have your own jagged edge. People can tell you about these things, but you have to experiment and get a feeling for it yourself.

I think of it like math homework. If I study the book, I feel like I’ve got it, and then when I take the test, I just don’t. I have to do it myself, write it down, before it really internalizes. I think it’s similar with choir. If I listen to a song, I think I have it, but I can’t sing it. If I sing it once, I’m already halfway there. There’s something about doing it, experimenting for yourself, that’s really important for where AI is at this time.

So everybody finds their own different value. If you’re doing research, information gathering, processing and synthesis, or if you’re doing creative work, ideation support can be really important. But you do need to make sure it is your voice when it needs to be. You can use it for ideas, but there’s a limit to how far that can represent something true.

Again, the goal is to enhance rather than replace your expertise, and that’s going to depend on thinking about what your existing strengths are.
